The Weeping Meadow (Greek - To livadi pou dakryzei)

The Weeping Meadow

Director: Theo Angelopoulos
Year: 2004
Language: Greek
Country : Greece
Cast: Alexandra Aidini, Nikos Poursanidis and Giorgos Armenis

Watching this movie was with a shock since the news of the great director's death came on the same day while watching this.I was so moved by the events.it gave another perspective to the viewing..I did it as a tribute to the great director..and was taken to a magical world..it went like a starry night over the hills..

The real class movie -This is the first of the trilogy.a heavenly visual treat with unique long shots and slow moving imagery.Class apart.

Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow is the first of three films in which Theo Angelopoulos plans to relate the past century of Greek history. The film begins in 1919 as a contingent of Greek refugees fleeing the Red Army arrives near Thessaloniki. One family, headed by the imposing Spyros (Kolovos), has brought Eleni (Aidini), an orphaned young girl, with them. Years later, she elopes with Spyros's son (Poursanidis), initiating a series of events that evoke classical Greek tragedy. After a brief period of happiness, Eleni's husband emigrates to the United States in search of a better life for the family, leaving his young bride alone to cope with the passage of time, the dangers of World War II and the betrayals of the Greek Civil War.

The imagery and narration is amazing..one narrative about the quest for a river which runs through the land and the origin being described as the meadows which weeps..are poetic and the entire movie is a poem..

Tribute to the master who wrote poems with colors on the screen..Theo Angelopoulos

What is the meaning of achievements in life?...is it the money ?..or is its the great nostalgia for the place we left calling us back..a great story set in the initial years of  Yugoslavian Civil War 1991.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1991. The disintegration of communist regime in Yugoslavia and Divko Buntic returns to the small town where he grew up to reclaim his family home. After a 20-year exile in Germany, with sexy young girlfriend Azra, lucky black cat Bonny and a pocketful of Deutschmarks. Divko uses his money and connections to forcefully evict estranged wife Lucija, but he tries to reunite with 20-year-old son Martin. Croatia has seceded, all Yugoslavs are being forced to take sides, and the Serbs begin bombing Dubrovnik. Although their area is on high alert, many still can't imagine anyone or anything could divide Bosnia and Herzegovina.the personal story runs in the mainstream where the war unfolds on the other front.

Emotional..touching..and a pleasant feel altogether
